BACKGROUND

The decision to decentralize governance structures in Kenya through the new constitution is a pragmatic response to shrinking central government budgets and poor targeting of programs that had left major cities like Nairobi in the margins of developments as compared to other cities of the world.

Kenya’s current economic blue print, Vision 2030, proposes a democratic process aimed at decentralizing decisions making and distributing resources equitably. It contemplates a devolved system that conforms to national and local structures.  It adopts the definition of devolution as “a shift power, authority, resources, and responsibilities from the center to other lower levels of government”

For Nairobi to benefit from the new dispensation it requires a paradigm shift in terms of its leadership and management style which is aimed at achieving the objectives for the better city, better life for everyone.

EK Centre plans to use the modeling of excellence in leadership. Learning and life to influence aspiring leaders to provide a compelling vision for Nairobi and work with the private sector, the government, youths, women and ordinary people to turn Nairobi  into a competitive, new haven based, regional economy. It also aims at changing the Nairobi, downtown and slums to become a destination with things to do and see the center of a knowledge based economy that can compete with any community, anywhere, anytime in the world.
